I went to the library regularly as a kid. I always enjoyed it they had story time and activities my mom was onto something brilliant with entertaining us during the winter months.
It’s no secret I love free, I can’t imagine there is someone out there that doesn’t. However, between my couponing hobby and knowing every event that is going on locally I especially love when I find something free to replace a subscription I pay for. Queue…cancelling audible, buying hard books and possibly a TV subscription!? If you have been following along you know how much I love my Alexa. In addition to waking me up she hangs out in my kitchen too. I listen to music, audiobooks, podcast and the news during the day. In my cost saving initiative I realized I was spending more than I am willing to admit on hard books and audio books. Like an embarrassing amount, and I would read 20 pages and put it down due to not liking it and then go order a different one. I decided I had to stop, besides wasting money they are heavy and when you have moved 7 times in 7 years you really get sick of moving books. Here is what you need to do today.
1. Get a library card, you can order hard books online and pick them up at your local library or physically go check out so many different books. (check if pick up is an option at your local branch). I can place mine on hold and they will ship from other libraries in my county to mine for me to go pick up. That is a win and less driving all around town for me.
2. Download the Libby App it is included in your library card and allows you download and hold audiobooks and digital books. This app works with a large network of library’s and has so many options.
3. Download the Hoopla App, this app is very similar to Libby however it works directly with your local library. You will often find books on one and not the other so you’ll want both to ensure you can find the book you want.
4. Download Kanopy on your TV or Device. You get credits each month through your library card and can use them to watch newly released movies.
5. Check out The Library Network to find free classes, recorded webinars, Broadway in Detroit tickets and discounted rates on concert tickets. This site also links you to the Michigan Activity Pass which you can get discounted parking at state parks, discounted rates at museums and campground and even some golf courses!
6. Check your local library calendar, they offer so many events. My local library ranges from story time with kids to lectures where you can learn something new. They even offer healthy cooking classes for adults and yoga on Tuesday’s. My favorite is the propagation station. So, when I accidently kill my basil plant, I just go get a new one. All this included in my free library card.
6. Go to your actual library. Most of them have great quiet rooms where you can read and relax or study.
The library hack…Saving me money, movies, classes, fitness, plants and so much more. Why did it take me so long as an adult to realize everything they have to offer?
For a complete list of events and benefits that your local library has to offer all you need to do is register for a library card! Good Luck 😊
