Couponing presents a fantastic opportunity to cut costs on your regular expenses. However, it’s important to be mindful as it can easily turn into an addictive habit, leading you to acquire items you might not necessarily need. Personally, I don’t find this to be a major concern, particularly when you’re snagging items for next to nothing!

Here are some strategies for dealing with excess items:

  1. Donate to shelters or churches: Sharing your surplus with those in need can make a meaningful difference in their lives.
  2. Use for housewarming or birthday gifts: Repurposing your extras as thoughtful gifts for friends and family on special occasions is a thoughtful way to spread joy without spending extra money.
  3. Create gift baskets and sell them: Get creative and assemble themed gift baskets using your surplus items. You can then sell these baskets at local markets or online platforms.
  4. Share with friends: Sharing is caring! Pass along your extras to friends who might appreciate them.

Here’s a guide to get you started:

Get Organized:

Create a Coupon List: Create sections by category: groceries, household items, personal care, etc.

Find Coupons:

Weekly Ad’s Newspaper: Many coupons are found in the junk mail pile. Look through ad’s that you receive weekly via paper mail and newspaper inserts.

Printable Coupons: Many websites and coupon apps offer printable coupons. Popular sites include Coupons.com, SmartSource.com, and RedPlum.com.

Mobile Apps: Utilize coupon apps like Ibotta, Rakuten, and Checkout 51 to find digital coupons and cashback offers.

Store Loyalty Programs: Sign up for store loyalty programs to receive exclusive coupons and discounts. I store these in the wallet app on my iPhone so I don’t have to carry physical cards with me.

Know Your Store’s Policies:

Understand your local stores’ coupon policies. Be aware of rules regarding stacking coupons, doubling, and expiration dates.

Timing is Key:

Coupons often coincide with sales cycles. Plan your shopping around store sales to maximize savings.

Learn The Lingo:

Familiarize yourself with couponing terminology such as BOGO (Buy One Get One), MFR (Manufacturer), and stacking (using a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon together).

Stack Coupons:

If allowed by the store, combine manufacturer coupons with store coupons for extra savings.

Loyalty Programs and Rewards:

Always join a store’s loyalty programs to earn points or rewards for your purchases. Some programs offer additional coupons and discounts.

Cashback and Rebate Apps:

Use cashback apps like Rakuten, Ibotta, and Checkout 51 to earn money back on your purchases.

Be Strategic:

It can be hard but don’t use coupons just for the sake of using them. Use them strategically on items you regularly purchase or products that are already on sale.

Follow Coupon Blogs and Forums:

Stay updated on the latest deals by following couponing blogs and forums. I highly recommend The Krazy Coupon Lady because you can filter down to a specific store. They also tell you exactly which coupons you need to clip and each stores weekly ad is available through the app.

Plan Your Shopping Trips:

Make a shopping list and plan exactly what you are buying with brands. This will save you time at the store and comparing prices.

Track Your Savings:

Keep a record of your savings. I get so excited to see the savings, I often transfer the savings to my saving account! This can be so motivating and help you refine your couponing strategy over time.

Remember, successful couponing takes practice and patience. As you become more experienced, you’ll develop your own strategies and techniques to save even more on your purchases. With time you will find your favorite stores and get into a great routine. Happy couponing!
