Motor City an extremely underrated city. I think it has received a bad rap for a long time however it is a blast of a city. Home of the Detroit Lions NFL Football team which plays at Ford Field, indoor thankfully! Next door is Comerica Park home of the MLB Detroit Tigers. Right around the corner is Little Caesars Arena home of the NHL Detroit Red Wings and NBA Detroit Pistons. So many sporting events walking distance to each other and in the heart of the city.

First of all, there are so many cultures mixed into the city, Greektown is lined with authentic amazing Greek food. Let’s not forget it’s in the Midwest so everyone is friendly and social. There is a bonus that you can get to Canada within minutes and explore two cities in one weekend. See post for Windsor which is well worth a trip, don’t forget the passport!

Detroit is known for Coney Dogs which is a hot dog that has a meat sauce, mustard and onions on it. However, what you will see everywhere are Coney Islands which are small diners and have the best breakfast around. Most of these are open 24/7 and tables turn very quickly. Be prepared to get a lot of food!
Downtown isn’t an overly busy city, there is Campus Martius Park which has a beach theme and food trucks in the summer and a Christmas tree, ice rink and little pop-up shops in the winter. From here you can walk to multiple restaurants, Fox Theater, Detroit Oprah House and other small theaters. I highly recommend the walking tour, which takes you down the RiverWalk and you see Canada across the river!

If it is a nice day, I would pack a picnic and spend the day at Belle Isle Park. This is an island in the Detroit River which is 900+ acres and the United States largest island park. There is a golf course, basketball courts, a free aquarium which accepts donations and is great thing to do with kids.
